RELCO Celebrates 25th Anniversary

WILLMAR, MN. RELCO Unisystems Corp., a Willmar MN based engineering and stainless steel fabrication company, is celebrating it’s 25th year providing dairy and food plants with sanitary food processing equipment and processing systems. “We would not be where we are today without skilled and dedicated employees and many other local resources available in the area”, explains Loren Corle, President at a recent employee gathering to celebrate the occasion.

In June of 1982 Loren Corle, a Willmar native, started the business by providing sanitary welding services to dairy plants which quickly grew to sanitary project construction followed by a fabrication shop to meet customized project needs. A few years later Doug Rolland merged his company, Rolland Engineering, with RELCO and the pattern was set for the design and engineering structure that now provides the core for today’s business technologies. In 1999 the purchase of KELLER™ Whey Systems technology for drying lactose and other dairy carbohydrates added technical expertise in all phases of whey processing and has provided cheese plants with a one-stop shop for dairy production systems.

Today RELCO employs 79 people; 21 in the Engineering department, 45 for metal fabrication and construction services and 13 providing sales and administrative functions. Steve Ennenga, General Manager, said  “many of our skilled metal finishing employees in the shop and construction crews have been trained locally at Ridgewater Technical College which is a valuable resource for us providing high quality skilled workers”.

The 40,000 sq. ft. fabrication shop has been expanded twice in the last 2 years to accommodate growing customer needs for the KELLER™ whey processing systems, RelTronix® controls for dairy plant automation and outside custom fabrication orders. Examples of equipment and food processing system components manufactured at RELCO are tanks, hoppers, augers, enclosures, cleaning systems, cheese vats, evaporators, spray and fluid bed dryers, dehumidifiers and many other items made from stainless steel used in food processing plants. Loren Corle, President explains that “one of our most valuable resources is our engineering staff that designs the food processing systems and equipment and continually implements new technologies to keep our customer plants safe and efficient. They have made RELCO a recognized industry leader through out the World for many of the products we provide.”

In April RELCO took another major growth step and acquired the assets of an engineering and fabrication company in Drachten, The Netherlands that provides similar services to dairy and food plants in Europe and other related regions. The company known as RELCO wet & dry B. V.  specializes in evaporation and spray and fluid bed drying systems. The Dutch company will provide the KELLER™ technologies to dairy plants in Europe and around the world that often are difficult to provide services to from Willmar.

RELCO continues to grow and thrive in Willmar while providing products and services throughout Minnesota, the US and globally thanks to dedicated staff and the Willmar business community.
